Worship to God: Are You Ready?
Before we can know if we are ready to worship God, we must know what Biblical worship to God is.
In the Bible, worship includes giving honor, reverence, and devotion to God. This is shown by both our outward acts and inward attitude.
Outward acts include prayer, praise, singing, teaching, and service.
Inward attitude includes submission, adoration, obedience, and recognizing God’s supreme worthiness as Creator & redeemer. There are two types of worship, unauthorized & authorized worship.
Unauthorized Worship – Worship that God has not approved. Matthew 15:9-19, Leviticus 10:1-2, and Colossians 2:23.
Authorized Worship – worship done in “spirit and truth”, John 4:24,
We are commanded to worship on the first day of every week, Acts 20:7. Any other times of worship, like Wed. is at the elder’s discretion.
The Bible gives us examples and commands for five different elements to the public worship.
- Teaching/Preaching (I Cor 4:17)
- Singing (Eph 5:19)
- Prayer (Acts 12:5)
- Lord’s Supper – Sunday only (Acts 20:7)
- Taking A Collection – Sunday only (I Cor 16:1-2)
That is a quick look at what worship is and worship that God approves.
Worship is a privilege and blessing that God has given us. God takes worship to Him very serious and so should we.
Here are some things to think about when it comes to our worship to God.
Do we pray for worship services before the day of worship?
We should think about, pray in advance that our worship services will please God. Pray for not only those leading our services but for all who will be attending.
Are we always late or so rushed to get to worship that our mood and the mood of our family is in a negative state for worship?
If so, here are some suggestions that can help.
- Prepare for Sunday on Saturday. Prepare for Wednesday early also.
- Prepare ours and our family’s clothes on the day before.
- Prepare something on Saturday for Sunday breakfast that can just be warmed up Sunday morning. For Wednesday put something for supper in the crockpot that morning.
- Get showers done on Saturday night, at least the children’s.
- Set our alarms to leave plenty of time for Sunday morning.
- Don’t plan activities on Saturdays that will keep us and our families out too late, make us tired.
- Always being late, sleeping in worship or being too foggy minded from lack of sleep, because we chose to stay up too late is not giving God the worship He accepts or deserves.
What is our attitude towards worship?
- Never say to ourselves or family “we have to go to worship”. Instead, say “we get to go to worship”. Our attitude towards the church and worship will set the tone for how our family views the church and worship. If it comes across as a burden from us, it will most likely come across that way to them.
How is my attendance to worship?
- Do we just come when it is convenient?
- Do we put other activities in place of worship services? If so, what does this say to our spouse, children and most importantly to God? It is putting Him second, below whatever we chose over Him.
- Do we plan our vacation travel around worship times? Learn about the congregations where you will be staying.
- Hebrews 10:25 tells us we are not to forsake the assembly. That includes during our vacations.
Are we reverent when we attend worship?
- Do we dress appropriately, modestly so as not to bring attention to ourselves instead of worship.
- Are we checking our phones during worship for texts and social media posts?
- Do we come expecting to be entertained or to worship & serve?
- Are we talking to the person next to us causing us both to be distracted from worship?
- Do we try and go to the restroom before services so we don’t have to get up and distract others during worship?
- Do I participate in the singing, think about what the song is saying?
- Do I listen to the prayers and the lesson? Taking notes can help in staying focused.
These are just a few things to think about when we worship our Amazing God. There are several of these points that I need to work on. If I want my worship to be pleasing and accepted by God, and I do, I am going to have to put more effort in planning for it. I know I take it for granted sometimes how easy it is for us to gather to worship compared to the Christians in the Bible times. We are so blessed that God loves and provides for us so much.
