We Have An Anchor
Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 6:00PM Speaker: Toby Soechting
Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-6
INTRODUCTION:
- Even the most modern and powerful ocean going ship does not set sail without first having an anchor.
- We have an anchor that keeps the soul!
- Our anchor is hope (Heb. 6:17-19). Our anchor is Jesus Christ.
DISCUSSION: A CHRISTIAN'S HOPE --
I. IS REAL (V. 3)
- The Bible pictures us as having a living hope!
- The Bible itself is living and active (Heb. 4:12)
- We are not talking about blind desire, but instead of confident expectation.
II. GOES BEYOND THE GRAVE (V. 4)
- We are promised an inheritance.
- Our inheritance is incorruptible (cf. Rom. 1:23).
- Our inheritance is undefiled.
- Our inheritance does not fade.
- Our inheritance is reserved in heaven.
- Our hope rises from the grave!
III. HAS A FOUNDATION THAT REMAINS FIRM (V. 5)
- We are kept by the power of God, through faith!
- Our faith is based on God's word (cf. Eph. 2:8; Jas. 1:21).
IV. WILL TURN GRIEF TO JOY (V. 6)
- Onward rejoicing I tread life's way; Higher I'm climbing each passing day; Hilltops of glory now rise in view; Where all shall be made new.
- Trials may shake us, but Christians always have something to hold on to and somewhere to fix our eyes.
CONCLUSION:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (1 Pet. 1:3 NKJV)
