Scripture: Psalm 90:1-17

INTRODUCTION:
  1. “LORD, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (Psalm 90:1–2, NKJV) 
  2. “So teach us to number ourdays, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12, NKJV) 
DISCUSSION:  GOD IS OUR HOME (DWELLING PLACE) --
I. AN ETERNAL HOME (VV. 1,2).
  1. If anyone knew what it felt like to be a stranger in a foreign land, Moses, knew.
  2. The home God has prepared for us through Christ (Jn. 14:1-3) is older than the mountains.
  3. We have no guarantee that we will live and die in the home of our childhood, but we are assured that our God and His promises are from everlasting to everlasting.
II. A HOME OF GRACE AND FORGIVENESS (VV. 3-17).
  1. Unlike God, our time is at best brief (Jas. 4:14).
  2. Death is a reality we cannot escape (vv. 5-6;  Heb. 9:27).
  3. So too is the reality of spiritual death (Rom. 3:23; 6:23).
  4. However, in Christ, we do not have to face the righteous nature of God without the hope of God’s mercy (v. 14).
Conclusion: “And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:17, NKJV)

  1. Parenting is as challenging as it is rewarding; as humbling as it is apt to make your feel like king of the world!
  2. Too many in our society have abdicated the throne of parenting.  In effect too many parents remain children, wanting someone else to be responsible.
DISCUSSION:
I. WHAT PARENTS WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO HAVE.
  1. Confidence in the word of God (Rom. 10:17; Jn. 5:39; 7:24).
  2. Character (Phil. 2:19-24)
  3. Compassion (Mt. 22:37-38; James 1:27).
  4. Competence (Mt. 25:14-30; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Cor. 15:58).
II. WHAT CHILDREN NEED THEIR PARENTS TO HAVE.
  1. Belief in the value of parenting (Prov. 22:6; Eph. 6:1-4).
  2. Presence  (John 1:1-3, John 1:14).
  3. Biblical wisdom and understanding (Jn. 8:32; James 1:5).
  4. An example worth following (1 Tim. 4:12; 2 Tim. 2:15).
Conclusion:  We cannot lead our children to places we ourselves are not willing to go.  Where are we leading our children?

INTRODUCTION:
  1. “(for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the house of God?);” (1 Tim. 3:5) 
  2. “…that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life and that your days may be prolonged.” (Deuteronomy 6:2, NKJV) 

DISCUSSION:  
I. FAMILY IS THE PLACE FOR PROCREATION.

  1. “Flee sexual immorality (fornication) Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.” (1 Cor. 6:18, NKJV) 
  2. Thou shalt not commit adultery (Ex. 20:14).
  3. God’s plan is for family to be the first step in socialization.

 II. FAMILY IS THE PLACE WHERE VALUES ARE BEST IMPARTED.

  1. Some, unwittingly teach their children to put other things before God, as they make their daily decisions.
  2. “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD…” (Genesis 18:19, NKJV) 

III. TO DO OTHERWISE IS NEITHER GODLY NOR WISE.

  1. Many today look to material possessions for happiness.
  2. Family values are not being taught to too many young people in our society. 
  3. The ultimate destiny of a child’s soul will be decided by our infinite God, but parents have a vital role as well.

Conclusion:  Our families involve a life-long commitment.  The only thing more important is a permanent commitment to God.

  1. According to FORBES magazine, for Mother’s Day, 38% of want Flowers, 36% want jewelry and 30% would like an ipad.
  2. When we give honor to our mother, we give honor to whom honor is due (cf. Rom. 13:7). 
DISCUSSION:  
Mention of her significance.
  • “And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bone, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:23–24)
Opportunity to grow. 
  • “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18, NKJV) 
Time for herself.
  • “And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a quiet place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.” (Mark 6:31, NKJV) 
Hope for the future.
  • “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13, NKJV)  
Edification.
  • “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.” (1 Peter 3:7, NKJV) 
Relationship.
  • “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8, NKJV)  
“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:” (Ephesians 6:2, NKJV)

Scripture: Jude 17-25

INTRODUCTION:
  1. It is thought that Jude was a brother of Jesus Christ, but he chose to describe himself as the “bondservant of Jesus Christ.”
  2. While Jude is a rather short epistle, it is not lacking for problems that needed to be addressed. The ultimate solution to the problem was to contend earnestly for the faith (v. 3).
  3. Jude reminded his readers of the condemnation and destruction (v. 5) that awaited them if they did not!
DISCUSSION: IN ORDER TO RESCUE THE PERISHING I MUST --
TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY
OWN SPIRITUAL GROWTH (VV. 20-21).
  1. Remember the words which were spoken (v. 17).
  2. Build yourselves up on the most holy faith (v. 20).
  3. Pray in the spirit (v. 20).
  4. Keep yourself in the love of God (v. 21)
  5. Look for the mercy of our Lord (v. 21).
II. SAVE OTHERS (VV. 22-23).
  1. A Christian should possess a compassion that compels them to look out for other people’s souls (v. 22).
  2. Some need to be pulled from the fire (v. 23).
  3. We must find a way to hate the sin, but love the sinner.
  4. As evangelist, we will need to balance our fear for ourself with our compassion for others.
Conclusion: “To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.” (Jude 25)

Scripture: Acts 7

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Stephen’s preaching (Acts 7) was both PLAIN and POWERFUL!
  2. The crowd’s reaction to it was VIOLENT (vv. 54-58).
  3. Still, so many Christians of the first century (and beyond) realize the great importance and obligation of EVANGELISM.
DISCUSSION:  Regarding Evangelism, Christians Do No Have An Option Because--
I. CHRISTIANITY IS TRUE.
  1. This is why early Christians went EVERYWHERE preaching the word (Acts 8:4).
  2. Many early Christians WITNESSED Jesus RAISED from the DEAD!
  3. In Christianity one must start with the FACTS!
II. MANY PEOPLE ARE LOST.
  1. In our culture it is not “politically correct” to identify another person’s BELIEFS as being WRONG.
  2. The Bible pictures the “lost” as being in a TERRIBLE condition with an even more horrible FUTURE IN STORE.
  3. The Bible presents HELL as a real place (2 Thess. 1:7-9; Psa. 9:17; Mt. 10:28; Rev. 21:8).
III. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.
  1. HEAR (Rom. 1:16; 10:17).
  2. BELIEVE (Heb. 11:6).
  3. REPENT (Lk. 13:3; Acts 2:38; 3:19).
  4. CONFESS (Rom. 10:9-10).
  5. Be BAPTIZED for remission of your sin (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16).
Conclusion:  “As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.” (Acts 8:3–4, NKJV)  
THE GOSPEL IS FOR ALL!  Let us get started and stay started preaching the word.

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Our thoughts become our BELIEFS, which become our attitudes.  They in turn are made manifest in our ACTIONS, which over time become our HABITS, which become our lifestyle, and our lifestyle becomes our DESTINY.
  2. Heaven is a PREPARED place for a PREPARED people (Jn. 14:1-6).   Our choices will determine our eternal DESTINY!

DISCUSSION:  What Will You Choose To Do With Jesus?

I. WHAT SOME DID.

  1. Judas Iscariot BETRAYED Him (Mt. 26:47-50).
  2. The priest and elders ENVIED Him (Mt. 27:18).
  3. Pilate’s wife FEARED Him (Mt. 27:19).
  4. The crowd wanted to see Him DEAD (Mt. 27:22, 23, 25).
  5. Pilate did what was POLITICALLY CORRECT with Him (Mt. 27:24,26).
  6. Pilate’s guards MOCKED and abused Him (Mt. 27:27-31).
  7. Peter DENIED Him (Mt. 26:69-75).
  8. The apostles ABANDONED Him (Mt. 26:31).

II. WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  1. Will you CRUCIFY Him again? (Heb. 6:6)
  2. Will you BETRAY Him to serve someone or something else?  (Col. 3:5)
  3. Can you be or remain INDIFFERENT  (cf. Mt. 27:24)?
  4. Will you RUN AWAY?
  5. Will you TRUST and LOVE Him completely. 

Conclusion:  Your thoughts and beliefs about Jesus Christ will become your eternal destiny.  What will you do with Jesus?

Scripture: John 4:27-39

INTRODUCTION:
  1. It is estimated that an average congregation baptizes only 5% of those people attending services regularly.
  2. One survey reveals that an average member of the church gives less than 4% of their estimated annual income to the church.
  3. The Institute for Church Growth asked 10,000 “church-goers” the question: “What was responsible for your coming to Christ and to this church?”  79% said it was because a friend or relative invited me.
  4. “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35) 
DISCUSSION:
I. REGARDING OUR TEXT.
  1. Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John the immerser (Jn. 4:3).
  2. The NKJV tells us that Jesus needed to pass through Samaria, while the NASB & ESV us the phrase had to.
  3. Jesus wanted to harvest the moment.
  4. When Jesus disciples returned, they did not see the harvest.
II. APPLICATION.
  1. Without laborers a crop cannot be harvested.
  2. The devil and death are tireless in their efforts against men’s souls!
  3. We need to ask ourselves if we are searching for solutions or exploring for excuses instead.
Conclusion:  If the Bible is true then we ought to preach it.  If Jesus is the Christ then we ought to serve Him.  If God has a gospel plan of salvation, then we ought to teach it.  In short, if souls are going to hell, we ought to do all we can to save them!

INTRODUCTION:
  1. As we encounter problems in life we will either slowly but surely overcome them, or we will slowly but surely fail to grow.
  2. A person does not have to be perfect to grow into the image of Jesus Christ, but that person does have to be conscientious.
  3. The Hebrews writer rebuked some of his brethren for needing milk instead of solid food (Heb. 5:12).
DISCUSSION:
I. AM  I  A TEACHER? (Heb. 5:12)
  1. We owe a debt we cannot pay.  We possess the gospel and owe it to the “world” to teach it!
  2. We should at least be teaching ourselves!
II. AM I WORKING OVERTIME TO BE AN EXAMPLE OF PURITY?
  1. My actions are the result of my attitudes.
  2. Is my mind meditating on the proper things? (Phil. 4:8-9)
III. AM I AWARE OF MY TONGUE?
  1. Let us pursue peace… (Rom. 14:19).
  2. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life… (Prov. 15:4).
IV. AM I AWARE OF OTHERS?
  1. Extending love to the unlovely?
  2. Bearing others burdens?
V. AM I IN MY “RIGHT” MIND?
  1. Do I possess the mind of Christ?
  2. One body and one mind? (Phil. 2:2)
Conclusion:  Jesus, and the life I live for Him, is worthy of my every consideration.

  2. “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, NKJV)
  3. Christian living is very much a personal matter, but let us never lose sight that Christianity is very much a TEAM “sport”.
DISCUSSION:
I. THE NEW TESTAMENT EMPHASIZES TEAMWORK!
  1. Jesus created a “team” of apostles (cf. Mt. 10:1-4).
  2. The apostles displayed the practice in their efforts.
  3. The word they appears 394 times in 272 verses in the book of Acts.
  4. A congregation is a team!
II. NOTICE BUT A PORTION OF THE “ONE ANOTHER” PASSAGES.
  1. love (Jn. 13) e. greet (Rom. 16:16)
  2. prefer (Rom. 12:10) f. serve (Gal 5:13)
